• Thesis Overview:

In this thesis, a practical design of a MEMS electrostatic synchronous micromotor has been analyzed, using 2-D numerical finite element method. The electric field, voltage distribution, as well as electrostatic energy obtained by means of 2-D finite element analysis. The electrostatic torque has been calculated as a function of rotor position and its average and ripple components have been determined. A problem with the electrostatic micro motor is that it has very pulsating torque and the ripple component of the driving torque has a considerable value, so it is difficult to achieve large electrostatic torques. To generate large torques which will do the useful work of the device, an optimal excitation sequence and an optimal geometric structure are required. In order to maximize the driving torque, several excitation sequences have been studied and finally the optimal excitation sequence has been selected for supplying the micro motor. The device geometry has a considerable influence on the torque of the electrostatic micro motor. It has been shown in this thesis, how average and ripple components of the electrostatic torque vary vs. geometric parameters variation. Also, optimal values for some geometric parameters have been found.
